Climate Change
Overview
A key goal of mercury policy is the reduction in mercury emissions, particularly to atmosphere. However, it is now recognised that the contribution of anthropogenic and natural emissions to our understanding of the global mercury budget is not sufficiently comprehensive to make accurate and confident assessments.
Predicting the effect of climate change on mercury in the UK environment will require the collective expertise of the UK’s climate change modelling community and academia.
Objectives
With insight into the consequences, UK policy on the international stage can be adapted to better protect the UK’s environmental and human health interests.

* Murray Gardner
Output
Short report outlining a strategy for incorporating climate change considerations into mercury policy (approximately 25 pages excluding annexes).
Outcomes
The integration of the impact of climate change on the global mercury budget into international policy relating to this element. The action will trigger additional global mercury modelling exercises, which will involve UK climate and earth systems scientists.
