Crustal emissions
Overview
A key goal of mercury policy is the reduction in mercury emissions, particularly to atmosphere. However, it is now recognised that the contribution of anthropogenic and natural emissions to our understanding of the global mercury budget is not sufficiently comprehensive to make accurate and confident assessments.
Crustal degassing (e.g. volcanoes) contributes significantly to the total natural emissions of mercury.
Objectives
The impact of degassing on the global mercury budget, and the consequences for the assessment of UK mercury deposition data will be considered.
Team
* David Pyle (Lead)
* Murray Gardner
Output
Short report outlining the impact of degassing on the global mercury budget (including the implications of volcanic eruptions in a policy-relevant time period) and research priorities.
Outcomes
Develop a strategy to understand the global impact of crustal emissions of mercury, as well as the significance of these for countries such as the UK.
